Dobie & Chester's
4 Legs of Love
Sprouts for Dogs
Red Clover, Alfalfa, Broccoli,
7 Lentils, Mung Beans & Hulless Oats
This New (2009) Mix is a perfect mix-in for dogs.
Tested and approved* by our mutts; Dobie and Chester
*Note: We grind the mix before mixing it into the meal. We use a food processor, but a blender works fine too. Dobie (the brown dog) eats the sprouts either way, but chester (the little beige guy) has been known to pick lentil sprouts out of his food. Chopping the sprouts solves the problem and gets more food into the finicky little fella.

Sprouting Instructions
Yields approximately 1 Cup (1/2 lb.) of Sprouts
Put 1/2 Cup of seed* into a bowl or your Sprouter.
Add 2-3 times as much cool (60-70°) water.
Mix seeds up to assure even water contact for all.
Allow seeds to Soak for 8-12 hours.
Empty the seeds into your sprouter if necessary.
Drain off the soak water.
Rinse thoroughly with cool (60-70°) water
and Drain thoroughly.
Set anywhere out of direct sunlight and at room temperature (70° is optimal) between Rinses.
Rinse and Drain again in 8-12 hours.
And, once more...
Rinse and Drain again in 8-12 hours.
And, perhaps once more...
Rinse and Drain in 8-12 hours.
We stop here. We like our sprouts small, and so will the dogs. Long roots - like you get if you grow the Leafy and Broccoli sprouts for several days
You can also just Soak for 8-12 hours and feed then. The soaked seeds are already alive and though they may not be their most nutritious they are still very nutritious - they are already without enzyme inhibitors (a very good thing indeed!) so they'll digest themselves and nourish your dog.
Harvest
Your sprouts are done 8-12 hours after your final rinse. Be sure to Drain them as thoroughly as possible after that final rinse.
The goal during the final 8-12 hours is to minimize the surface moisture of your sprouts - they will store best in your refrigerator if they are dry to the touch.
Refrigerate
Transfer your sprout crop to a plastic bag or the sealed container of your choice - glass is good too - and put them in your refrigerator - if you can keep your 4-leggers from eating them all first.
* If using Single Harvest Pack use the whole bag.
Remember that the yield will be approximately 3.5:1, so in theory you can start with as much as 1/4 as much dry seed as your Sprouter has capacity.

Description
We have had dogs in our home forever. Beanie's Awesome Mix is named after our first dog, Clem's Choice is named for our 2nd dog, so it seems like this mix should have been introduced ages ago - all of our dogs have eaten sprouts. We decided it was about time we put something together that was specifically good for dogs, and also easy to get them to eat. I'll say one more time; we grind the sprouts in a food processor before mixing them into the other food we are serving. We grind just before feeding, so the sprouts are still alive, and because they end up so mixed in - every morsel is consumed, even by our finicky dog Chester. This is great stuff!

Our original trio of girls came to us in very lean years. We didn't have enough money to feed them high quality food until they were senior citizens. None of them lived longer than 12 years. That's just not enough time.

Our current dogs - boys named Dobie and Chester - eat better than we did during those lean years. We're glad we can offer these sprouts to our dogs, and to your dogs. Feed them well - they are dogs. 'Nuf said.

We are not telling you to go 100% raw. Do your own research. We will tell you; watch out for mercenary corporations and elite clubs telling you raw is just plain bad. As always - in everything - be careful who you trust. Beware Dogma!
A Note To Tripods: We have known quite a few 3 leggers in our day. Please accept our apology for the name of this mix. Would that there were more space available on our small labels, we would have included tripods. 3 legs or 4 - May Dog Be With You!
Note from Sproutpeople
All of the seeds in this mix - except for Broccoli - are from sources which are certified organic. We know our Broccoli to be the very best sprouting Broccoli available. If we could find organic seed which came even close in quality and flavor, we would get it in a heartbeat, but we've never seen any (except for a tiny lot in 1999). We test several lots of seed every year, but the organic Broccoli is always pathetic compared to ours, so we stick with the farmer we have been buying from since 1998. He assures us it has very little non-organic treatment as it grows, and none close to harvest time. We have been eating sprouts grown from this farms seed for over 11 years now - so have our dogs - and so have our human children - need I say more?

Easy Sprout
Our most popular sprouter, it is also our personal favorite. Great drainage and the best air-circulation of any sprouter. The mandatory choice for tropical sproutpeople. Very versatile! We have 2 dozen in our home.

|
SproutMaster
The greatest tray sprouter ever.
Stackable - add trays to build your own sprout skyscraper. Excellent drainage. Very versatile.

Hemp Bag
The perfect bean sprouter and also good for other seeds. The Hemp Bag is not a great choice for tiny seeds like Alfalfa, Clover and Broccoli, but since those are grown so short in this mix, it is a fine choice for 4 Legs of Love. The best travel sprouter ever! Superior drainage and air-circulation.
|
|
|
|
Jar and Lid
The least expensive, most basic sprouter.
Less air-circulation and drainage than other sprouters, but a fine choice for any skilled sprouter or for those willing to work a bit harder at rinsing and draining. As 4 Legs of Love is such an easy crop, the Jar with a Medium or Fine Mesh Screen is a fine choice.

We only use the phone for emergencies.
Back in 2001 we were still using the phone. One day I was talking to a long-time customer while pushing my (then 4 year old) daughter on the swing in our backyard (this is what a mom n' pop business is like on the internet). It dawned on me that my priorities were severely messed up, so I stopped using the phone. I love to talk and I love to help, but my family would never see me if I picked up the phone again, and that's just wrong don't you think?!
The very best way to contact us is through E-mail =:-)
We are quite fast and VERY thorough. We love to help.
We have been an internet only business since 2001. We are not a big corporation. We are but 2 people, Mom n' Pop Sprout. We decided after years of juggling our family's (kids, dogs, cats and even our own) needs, and the needs of Sproutpeople, that we had to make more time for our kids, so we stopped talking on the phone. All calls go to voice mail and have since 2001.
We are very fast to fill orders and answer e-mail, and though we wish we could make the time to talk, we just can't seem to get more minutes into a each hour. We are many years older than when we started and our days are too short and made up of too few hours to do everything. This limitation in our business has not kept us from pleasing our customers, nor from growing (as we have every year since 1993). We do what we do as well as we can, and we think we do it very well indeed.
We appreciate your patronage more than we can say. We ask that you use the phone for emergencies only and that you search our site for answers before e-mailing us. This site is bigger than any 4 sprout books put together, it is always available and it is free, and we know that almost all questions are answered here.
Thanks again for your support and your many kind words.
